DAVIS
SR., CREWS, AND EATON SCORE ON LSBT
There were 92 players
who entered the August 13th-14th, $1,000 added Lone Star 9-Ball event this past weekend at Skinny Bob’s Billiards in
Round Rock, Texas. With 4 divisions, 92 players, and 139 entries, this event was another chart topper for the Lone Star
Tour. Players came in droves from all over Texas. Notables included Kevin Guimond, Frank Ferrer, David Henson, Al Mason, Bill
Fuller, Casey Crews, Tom Mooney, Thorndale junior player Ian Leyendecker, Jim Miller, John Palmore, David Escobedo, Jacob
Jones, Antonio Mendietta, Patrick Hill, James Davis Sr., James Davis Jr., and many, many, more.
Tournament play followed
each of the 4 player auctions which yielded over $5,000 in addition to $4,680 in tournament money. On Saturday the 50 player
Open field was narrowed down to the final 16 for Sunday. The final 8 on the winners’ side yielded Davis Sr. over Drew
McCoy 9-4, Guimond defeated Chris Haussmann 9-2, Mason bested Davis Jr. 9-4, and Ferrer bested Tracy Sanders 9-8. The west
side 8 saw Mauricio Chairez defeat Mendietta 7-2, Ray Tull best Fuller, Henson eliminate Hill 7-1, and Brian Sanders squeeze
by Corey Dordek 7-6. As the 4 players from the no-loss side moved west, the action became even more intense. Davis Jr. eliminated
Chairez 7-6, Sanders ousted Tull 7-5, Henson bested McCoy 7-6, and Haussman fell to Sanders who lost his first match but won
5 consecutive to finish 7th-8th. On the final 4 winners’ side, Davis Sr. moved past Guimond 9-2 while Mason finished
Ferrer, 9-3. It was Davis Sr. over Mason 9-7 for the hot seat, while Henson added Davis Jr. and Mason to his list of
10 consecutive victims after losing his first round match to Mason. The final match between Henson and Davis Sr. wowed the
crowd as both players fought tooth and nail for every ball. Davis Sr. ended Henson’s run in the first set by a score
of 9-7. Congratulations to James Davis Sr. who won both the Open 9-ball and One Pocket divisions, and runner-up in both, David
“LD” Henson.
The Amateur division
saw 50 entries as well and completed in 1 day. On the winners’ side final 8, Cindy Parvala was defeated by Mauricio
Chairez 3-1, Casey Crews bested Jacob Jones 3-1, Cliff Johnson ousted Fidel Gonzalez, and Kim Sanders fell to Tom Mooney 3-1.
West side final 8 action saw B. Gonzalez best Rauli Parvala, Crews top T.J. Ortiz, Ian Leyendecker eliminate F. Gonzalez,
and Josh Dordek move past Matt Jarolik. Back east for the hot seat, Chairez inched by Mooney 3-2, while Crews and Jones
made their way into the final 4. Crews came alive after grueling wins over Cliff Johnson, Jones, and Mooney. The first
set saw Crews breeze by Chairez 3-1. In overtime Crews kept pace as Chairez watched from is chair. At 2-0, Crews broke the
balls and the 9-ball rolled in clean for a 3-0 shutout and very climactic ending to a fantastic event. Congratulations to
Casey Crews who paid a $25 entry, $10 for himself in the auction, and won an astounding $850.
In the 20 player
One Pocket division, David Henson blew through the bracket undefeated with wins over Mason, Rocky Esquival, and Davis Sr.
Making a bid of his own, Davis Jr. defeated Crews and Rod Gustafson before he lost the hot seat to Henson, 3-2. After a first
round loss to Henson, Davis Sr. blew through the one-loss side winning an incredible 8 consecutive matches which included
wins over Eaton, Mason, Gustafson, Esquival, Davis Jr., and finally two sets over Henson 3-2, 2-1.
The Ladies Open 9-Ball
event saw 19 contestants including former pros Gail Eaton and Cristina De La Garza, and BCA champions Jennifer Kraber and
Kim Sanders, compete for almost $1,000 in prize money. On the final 4 winners’ side it was De La Garza over Nancy French
7-4 and Eaton bested Kraber 7-2. Eaton captured the hot seat 7-4 over De La Garza while Sanders plowed through the one-loss
side with 5 consecutive wins, Mary Gros with 4 consecutive wins, but were both eliminated by Kraber 5-3, 5-4. Kraber left
De La Garza in her wake as well, and with that earned herself a shot at Eaton, and redemption. Kraber captured the first set
with ease, 7-2, but her victory was short-lived. After a break between sets, Eaton was more determined than ever and shutout
Kraber in the second set 5-0.
